FRATERNITY HISTORY

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. began as a Social Study Club in the Fall of 1905 under the guidance of Charles Cordozza "CC" Poindexter. The Social Study Club later formed into a Literary Society, with meetings taking place at home of Mrs. Annie Singleton, who was regarded as the "Mother of the Fraternity." The Literary Society became a Fraternity on the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY on December 4, 1906 on an ice cold Tuesday, making it the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity for African-American men. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was founded by seven college students known as "The Seven Jewels."
